Senate to vote on under-18 helmet measure

Published March 7, 2007 at midnight

The Senate will vote this morning on a measure that would require people under 18 to wear a helmet when riding on a motorcycle.

House Bill 1117 cleared the Senate Veterans, State and Military Affairs Committee on Monday.

At that hearing, more than a dozen bikers accused lawmakers of encroaching on the rights of parents to decide what's best for their children.

"Motorcycling is a way of life. We live our freedom," said Deborah "Tiger" Chandler. "No helmet for me. No helmet for my children. We don't wear helmets. This bill discriminates against motorcyclists."

Colorado is one of three states that does not have a helmet law.
