Coma victim wakes, talks, relapses into coma
Published March 7, 2007 at midnight
A Southern Colorado woman who was in a vegetative state for more than 6 years regained consciousness briefly and talked to television reporters in Colorado Springs before relapsing back into a vegetative state today.
Christa Lilly had a heart attack and a stroke in 2000. That's the last thing she remembered when she awakened.
Lilly slipped into a vegetative state in November of 2000. Family said she was in what is essentially a coma, but with her eyes open.
Lilly spoke to 11 News, KKTV in Colorado Springs, while she was lucid.
Lilly's mother, Minnie Smith, told the station that her daughter has awakened 4 other times in the past, but not as completely as this and was not able to speak.
Smith, who has been taking care of her in her home, said her daughter awakened Sunday.
"Every morning, I always check on her when I wake up, before I go to the bathroom. I always say, Hi baby, how are you doing? She said, I'm fine and that's when I knew she was awake." Smith said to KKTV.
