The Show rosters set, but focus on state tournaments
Published March 6, 2007 at midnight
Sean Cunningham and Stephen Franklin of Aurora Central are aware of the dangers of looking ahead when it comes to state tournament basketball. The same can be said of Alyssa Fressle and Jaclyn Thoman of Highlands Ranch.
Yet, for a few hours Monday at the Pepsi Center, the four were able to look ahead at their opportunities to play in The Show 2007. The boys and girls all-star games, sponsored by the Denver Nuggets, will be played April 6 before the Nuggets play the Dallas Mavericks. The girls play at 3:30 p.m., the boys at 5 p.m.
The more immediate task, though, is for top-ranked Aurora Central (26-0) to win its Class 5A final four game Thursday against defending state champion Mullen (16-10) at the Coors Events Center in Boulder. The Highlands Ranch girls (23-3) play their 5A semifinal game Wednesday against Horizon (22-4) at CU.
"This week, the all-star game means nothing," Cunningham said. "Our goal is to win the championship, we don't want to settle for less. We want to win the gold ball. We can really think about all-star honors next week."
"The game will be a good way to cap the season, but for us, this is the week that counts," Franklin said. "I just think about the team right now, not the extra honors for me and Sean."
For Thoman and Fressle, thinking gold is the only way to go as they seek to defend their championship and win a fifth for the Falcons.
"We just can't look past this week, no matter how wonderful the individual honors are,"
Thoman said. "The tradition has been great at Highlands Ranch and we have a role to keep that tradition going. It kind of puts a little more pressure on you, but it is a good feeling to have."
"This is pretty cool," said Fressle, a junior. "But we are still concentrating on the task at hand."
The players and coaches were selected for the all-classification teams by a panel of sportswriters and broadcasters. Information: Denver Nuggets group sales, 303-405-1212.
