Suspect in 7-Eleven killing heads to trial

Published March 6, 2007 at midnight

An Arapahoe County District Court Judge today ordered the suspect in a December shotgun slaying of a convenience store clerk to be held for trial.

Judge John L. Wheeler found the evidence against John Andrew Doubleday, 23, is sufficient to support the charges and scheduled Doubleday’s arraignment in the death of Jutte Burton Gallegos for April 30.

Doubleday is charged with first-degree murder, first-degree murder after deliberation and attempted robbery.

Doubleday is accused of killing Gallegos with a single shotgun blast to the back while she attempted to run away. She was working the graveyard shift alone at an Aurora 7-Eleven store on the night of the attack, Dec. 10.

Doubleday admitted he killed the clerk in a video-taped interview with police detectives made the shortly after he was captured at a Colorado Springs motel 11 days after the shooting.

In the interview with police, Doubleday is asked if he killed Gallegos. He responds "Yes, sir."

But Doubleday also told the detectives that he planned only to rob the store and he had no intention of killing anyone. He said his gun fired accidentally.
