On-line scams surface in JeffCo

Published March 6, 2007 at midnight

Jefferson County District Attorney Scott Storey is warning consumers to be wary when shopping on-line, even on the popular Craig’s List Web site.

In the past two days, the District Attorney’s Economic Crime Unit has taken numerous calls from people who were scammed while selling merchandise on Craig’s List, Story reported.

The person buying the item sends a check to the seller in an amount much higher than agreed upon. When the seller receives the check, the seller contacts the purchaser who instructs them to deposit or cash the check and wire the excess back to the purchaser.

The purchase check is no good and the seller is out all the money returned in change.

One of the callers agreed to sell an item for $700 and then received a check for $3,000. This person, unfortunately, wired $2,300 back to the seller, according to the DA.

"In a situation like this, there is generally nothing law enforcement can do," warns Storey, "That’s why it is so important that we warn people before they get involved in suspicious financial transactions with people they do not know."

If you have questions, contact your local law enforcement agency or District Attorney’s Office. In Jefferson County, you can also call the District Attorney’s Fraud Hotline, 303-271-6980.
