Man sentenced in shotgun slaying

Published March 6, 2007 at midnight

Robert Sandoval-Candelaria was sentenced to 13 1/2 years in prison today for killing his girlfriend and another incident in which he led police on a wild car chase.

Sarah Heine, 21, was killed by a shotgun blast to the head at close range on Nov. 22, 2004.

Sandoval-Candelaria, 23, said the shooting was an accident, that he didn't know the shotgun was loaded and only had wanted to scare Heine.

He was charged with first-degree murder, but a jury found him guilty of reckless manslaughter.
