NOW, THAT'S USING YOUR BEAN

Jelly Belly makes a product called Sport Beans.

The treats are geared toward athletes and are formulated with carbohydrates, electrolytes and vitamins B and C. They're billed as ideal portable power for those looking for a fast, great-tasting source of energy.

The beans were just as effective as sports drinks and gels in maintaining blood sugar levels and improving exercise performance in competitive endurance athletes who participated in a study by researchers from the UC Davis Sports Medicine Program.

PIKES PEAK MARATHON REGISTRATION, TAKE 2

After days of apologizing while fielding more than 1,000 frantic message board postings from frustrated runners, the board for the Pikes Peak Marathon and Ascent on Monday picked a new sign-up date: March 13.

Thank goodness it's not a Friday.

If you tried to register at 8 a.m. March 1 as directed, there was a meltdown of the online registration site, Active.com, overwhelmed by runners trying to get into Pikes Peak and other popular races that picked the precise same registration time.

The board decided on a complete registration do-over for the marathon and Wave 2 of the Ascent, but you have to be up earlier: 6 a.m. for the ascent, 6:30 a.m. for the marathon. For details, go to PikesPeakMarathon.org.
