Fazekas earns third yearly WAC honor

Nevada's Nick Fazekas was named the men's basketball player of the year by the Western Athletic Conference for a third straight season, joining former Utah athlete Keith Van Horn as the only three-time winner of the award.

Ralston Valley High School graduate Fazekas is averaging 20.9 points and 11.3 rebounds.

PIONEERS PREVAIL Michael Goltra recorded two goals and two assists to spark the 20th-ranked University of Denver men's lacrosse team (3-2) to a 13-8 home win Sunday against No. 19 Maryland-Baltimore County (2-1).

FLURRY FOR FLURY Ali Flury scored five goals and teammate Kristie Leggio added four goals to power the DU women's lacrosse team (3-1) to a 20-9 road victory against Longwood (0-4) in Farmville, Va.

ROADRUNNERS SWEEP Green Mountain High School graduate Ted Jamison gave up four hits and one earned run in six innings to help the Metro State baseball team (3-8, 2-2 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) win 8-2 in the second game of a doubleheader sweep against Colorado Christian (6-7, 2-2) at Auraria Field.

The Roadrunners won the opener 14-5 with five shutout innings in relief by Laramie High graduate Armando Casas.

REGIS, MINES SPLIT Etienne Materre collected four hits and three RBI to spark the Regis University baseball team (7-9, 1-2 RMAC) to a 17-5 home victory in the opening game of its doubleheader against Colorado School of Mines. The Orediggers (4-6, 2-1) won the second game 10-3.

BUFFALOES EARN UPSET Monica Milewski, Franziska Jendrian and Melisa Esposito each won singles and doubles matches to lead the University of Colorado women's tennis team (7-3, 3-0 Big 12) to a 5-2 upset win against 14th-ranked Baylor (6-5, 1-1) in Boulder.

BEARS QUALIFY Northern Colorado wrestlers Kenny Hashimoto (141 pounds), Reece Hopkin (285), Shawn Vincent (184), Tony Mustari (125) and Luke Salazar (157) qualified for the NCAA Division I wrestling championships after Saturday's West Regional in Cedar Falls, Iowa.

HOOD PACES 14ERS Former Air Force Academy athlete Antoine Hood scored 16 points to help the NBA Development League's Colorado 14ers (24-14) to a 98-97 home victory Sunday against the Sioux Falls Skyforce (20-16) at the Broomfield Event Center.
