Church fire investigated
Published March 5, 2007 at midnight
Fire investigators have determined that the fire at the Church of the Nazarene in Lakewood Sunday night started in the bathroom of the daycare area.
However, what caused the two-alarm fire is still under investigation. Faulty electrical wiring is suspected but other causes have not been ruled out.
"There was nothing to indicate that it was intentionally set," said Cindy Matthews, spokeswoman for West Metro Fire.
No one was hurt in the fire, which was reported at 9:02 p.m. Sunday at the church, 1755 Dover Street. It caused $200,000 damage to the library, day care area and a common area, mostly to the electrical system. The rest of the building was not affected.
While part of the church did have sprinklers, the burned area did not. There was a fire detector in the affected area, which is how the fire department was alerted.
A total of 35-45 firefighters with 8-9 trucks battled the blaze, which was reported at 9:02 p.m. It was under control at 10:49 p.m. Firefighters had trouble fighting the flames which got in the space between two separate roofs on the building.
