Broomfield shoots down D'Evelyn
Published March 4, 2007 at midnight
BROOMFIELD D'Evelyn had no defense for Broomfield's free throw shooting.
The Eagles connected on a remarkable 20-of-23 free throws in the fourth quarter to advance to the Class 4A semifinals with a 58-45 victory over the Jaguars on Saturday at Broomfield High School.
The game was tied at 35-35 after three quarters when D'Evelyn's Mark Schaffer hit a three-pointer while falling down to end the third. But when Tim Halliday hit a three-pointer in the fourth quarter to build Broomfield's lead back up to 44-38 with 5:25 remaining, the Jaguars started fouling, and Broomfield (21-5) made them pay.
Halliday hit all seven of his free throw attempts in the fourth, and Doug Fankell was five of six from the line.
"It's nice to have a good free throw shooting team,'' said Halliday, who was perfect on eight free throw attempts in the game and led the Eagles with 17 points. "It's something we can rely on.''
D'Evelyn (19-7) connected on just five of 11 free throws in the final quarter. The Jaguars couldn't get the full benefit of their bonus situation because they kept missing the front end of their one-and-ones.
When Broomfield took a 52-43 lead with just a minute remaining, the Jaguars started launching three pointers, but they couldn't find their mark.
D'Evelyn's Andrew Hooper was held to nine points, half of his season average. The smaller Eagles surrounded him with up to three defenders under the basket, but they were fast enough to provide help when Hooper passed to a teammate.
"We're a small team but we play great defense and get the job done,'' Halliday said.
The Eagles also can shoot the three pointer. They hit four of them in the first half as they built a 27-19 halftime lead, but D'Evelyn came back in the third quarter with an 8-0 scoring run to trail only 30-29 midway through the quarter. When Schaffer hit the three pointer to end the third and tie the game, it looked like the Jaguars finally had the momentum on their side. But with Broomfield's fans in full throat, the Eagles put down D'Evelyn's rally. The fourth quarter started with the theme that would carry Broomfield to victory, with Halliday hitting all three of his free throws after being fouled while shooting a three-pointer. After that, D'Evelyn never caught up.
Kurt Lindgren scored 20 points to lead D'Evelyn.
Broomfield, the No. 1 seed from the Jim Baggot Region, will face Lincoln (17-7) in next week's semifinals.
