Pueblo South ousts Windsor in nick of time

Ralston Valley's fourth-quarter run secures win

Published March 3, 2007 at midnight

ARVADA - Cody Sorensen had a SportsCenter moment Friday night at Ralston Valley High School that sent Pueblo South to the round of eight in the Class 4A boys state basketball tournament.

Sorensen's layup just as time expired helped the Colts beat Windsor 51-49.

The play started with an inbound pass on the far end of the court with 3.5 seconds on the clock. Kameron Wilhite threw the ball in to DaQuan Cartwright, who passed it over to an unguarded Sorensen. It looked at first like he might run out of time before he shot the ball, but he knew exactly how much time to use.

"I remember hearing on -ESPN one time that one to two seconds is a lot more time than you think," said Sorensen, who finished with 10 points. "So I took my time with it and made sure I put it in."

Players for Windsor (22-3) stood in disbelief when the buzzer sounded, looking to the referee to see if he would allow it. But it was clear Sorensen got the shot off in time.

Seconds before Sorensen's winner, Windsor's Craig Von All-man hit a clutch three-pointer with a defender in his face to tie it at 49-49.

The clock ran a little too long after the shot, though, and the referees had 3.5 seconds placed on the clock, instead of the 0.1 seconds that showed after Von Allman's shot.

With 21 points, Matt Elliott led all scorers, but the smaller Colts defended Windsor's 6- foot-6 post player Matt Tasset well. Tasset was limited to four points and two rebounds.

Pueblo South (24-1) trailed at the end of every quarter until it finally overcame the Wizards with a 17-point fourth quarter. Wilhite led the Colts with 14 points.

"Windsor was everything we expected," Sorensen said. "We thought we'd be OK if we could shut down Tasset, but they were better than that."
