Last-second shot lifts Harrison; Fossil Ridge surprises Golden
Published March 3, 2007 at midnight
GOLDEN - Harrison turned a Paige in the nick of time Friday as the Panthers beat Silver Creek 53-51 in the Class 4A girls basketball 4A Sweet 16.
With a scant 0.4 seconds left, Harrison's Paige Ricker put in a missed shot by Myecha Taylor to provide the final margin for the Panthers (22-3).
Second-seeded Harrison had gained possession with 13 seconds left after a traveling call against the Raptors (18-7). Taylor missed a shot with 3.9 seconds left, and the rebound was pulled down by three players. A jump ball was called, with Harrison retaining possession.
Ricker passed the ball in to Taylor, who again missed. Ricker rebounded and immediately went up with her shot.
"I don't know if I had time to think," said Ricker, who scored 16 points. "Just get the rebound and go up. You don't think, you just do it."
Silver Creek, the No. 5 seed, took a 45-44 lead with 4:44 remaining on a basket by Amy Snella. Within the next 2 minutes, the Raptors trailed 51- 45.
After a three-pointer by Taylor, who finished with 16 points, and baskets by Ricker and Tracee Hamacher, Harrison appeared to be in command.
Erin Gunther answered with a three-pointer for Silver Creek to spark a quick comeback that put the Raptors in position to win before the final sequence.
"When we needed to, we couldn't stop (Ricker) or (Taylor) and it hurt us in the end," Silver Creek's Meghan Heimstra said. "We would get a spurt, they would get one. We didn't have the one at the end we needed."

FOSSIL RIDGE 62, GOLDEN 53 - Fourth-seeded Fossil Ridge went long range in its victory against host Golden in the Sweet 16. The Raptors (20-5) continued to make the most of their first appearance in the state tournament by upending the top-seeded Demons (21-4).
Aly Bonham hit six three- pointers, four in the second half, in scoring a game-high 23 points. Gabs Lucero, who added 18 points, also hit a three, as did Hannah Brashear, who scored eight points.
"It was just a team effort, as everyone has to be on their 'A' game," Bonham said. "I felt that we were at that level (Friday). Even without Cassie (Lam- brecht) they are a very good team. My disappointment is that I was not able to play against her."
Even without Lambrecht, who injured her knee Feb. 9, Golden made a good showing. Samantha Neal helped the Demons start strong, scoring 11 of Golden's 13 points in the first quarter. She finished with 14.
Amber Nelson added four three-pointers for the Demons and totaled 16 points.
"It was difficult when you feel things are going to go your way, then something unexpected happens," Nelson said of Lambrecht's injury. "We tried, we played hard. It is just a disappointing way to end the year."
