Broomfield, Alamosa advance

Eagles defense key; sloppy win for Mean Moose

Published March 3, 2007 at midnight

BROOMFIELD - Meeting in the playoffs is becoming a habit for the Broomfield and Windsor girls basketball teams.

The top-seeded Eagles are enjoying the familiarity.

The teams met last year in the same round and in the same region. As it did last season, Broomfield won, this time convincingly, 57-30, in the third round of the Class 4A girls state tournament.

Defense was the story for the Eagles (24-1). They forced 24 turnovers, and as Windsor's Mallory Duran said, took the fifth- seeded Wizards (14-12) completely out of the game.

"We played scared all night," said Duran, who finished with a team-high 11 points. "Their defense defiantly took us out of our game; they played hard, aggressive and was very strong."

Windsor trailed 10-3 only 3 minutes into the game, and it got worse as Broomfield built an 18-point cushion by halftime.

Anna Prins said Broomfield talked in the locker room before the game about using several defensive schemes to throw Windsor off its game.

"They didn't know what to do and they fell behind early," Prins said. "It's nice to have a few different options to use on teams that they might not have seen before."

On offense, the top-seeded Eagles received a team-most 14 points from Prins. Katie Calderwood added 12 points and nine players scored for Broomfield.

"(Friday) Chaundra Sewell and I were talking about it at our team breakfast, and none of us care if we score the game high," Calderwood said. "We like playing as a team and getting the ball to the open person."

ALAMOSA 50, MOUNTAIN VIEW 36 - Too many turnovers and too many missed free throws could have been a disastrous formula for third-seeded Alamosa.

Still, the Mean Moose found a way to win.

Katie Bussey and Kelsie Krueger each scored 17 points to lead Alamosa to a win against Mountain View in the third round.

Krueger was a force inside, also grabbing 10 rebounds for her fourth double-double this season. She said hitting the boards always is a big factor.

"You've just got to get the rebounds, and that's a huge key for us," Krueger said. "By getting the rebounds, we keep the game going in our favor. It's a battle for the rebounds and you can't stop."

Despite the win, the Mean Moose (21-4) didn't play particularly well, committing 20 turnovers and going 1-for-9 from the free-throw line in the first three quarters before hitting 10-of-11 in the final period.

"We came out pretty slow, but it seems to be what we normally do in games, but we came out of it (Friday)," said Bussey.

No. 7 Mountain View played Alamosa tough throughout, trailing by only seven entering the fourth quarter.

Brianne Beemer led Mountain View (16-10) with 12 points.
