Weather in March can run gamut

Published March 2, 2007 at midnight

Denver's weather during March features frequent and sometimes rapid changes.

Temperatures can sometimes rise into the 70s or even 80s, and Chinooks are still possible, bringing strong winds to the foothills.

Cold fronts can still drop down from Canada, causing temperatures to fall below zero sometimes.

Warm, moist air from the Gulf of Mexico will occasionally clash with Pacific storm systems, triggering thunderstorms.

Tornadoes have occurred this month. However, the convergence of weather systems often leads to snow.

On average, March is Denver's snowiest month, with an average of 11.7 inches.

The National Weather Service 30-day outlook indicates near normal temperatures, while precipitation is forecast to be slightly above normal.
