Three hurt in ambulance crash

Published March 2, 2007 at midnight

An ambulance skid off the road, crashed down a steep embankment and injured three people on board this morning about 2 miles north of Alma in Park County.

State Trooper Gilbert Mares said the ambulance driven by James T. Franklin, 39, of Fairplay, went out of control while going around a left-hand curve and went off the right side of the roadway, down the hillside and stopped on its wheels.

Franklin, who was wearing a seat belt, suffered minor injuries.

Two unrestrained passengers, Dustin Stevens, 25, of Fairplay, and Peter Kolts, 35, of Alma, suffered moderate injuries.

The three men were taken to Summit Medical Center in Breckenridge.

The driver is suspected of driving too fast, Mares said.
