Smoky Hill moves ahead with help of its forwards

Published March 2, 2007 at midnight

COLORADO SPRINGS - By now, most everyone in 5A boys basketball knows Josh Cassaday is the most dangerous player on the Smoky Hill team.

Cassaday, a 6-foot-6 senior who can make the outside jumper and excels on the drive, again led the Buffaloes, this time with 17 points and eight rebounds in a 73-60 victory against Chatfield in the round of 16 at World Arena.

Smoky Hill, though, has another talented, multidimensional forward, Sam Huebner, a 6-5 senior who scored 15 points, grabbed six rebounds and blocked four shots for the Buffaloes (22-3), the No. 1 seed in the Truscott Region.

That kind of big talent kept Smoky Hill in the lead Thursday despite eight three-pointers from the Chargers (17-6).

Huebner, not known as an outside shooter, made a three- pointer at the start of the game.

"It's a new part of my game," Huebner said.

Huebner, blessed with unusually long arms, also is a premier shot blocker. He and Cassaday have been friends since childhood, and the two also have an uncanny sense of how to set up the other with precision passing.

Smoky Hill coach Ken Shaw was pleased with how his players spread the court and found the open player. Reserve Travis Stroth also was a factor with 12 points, five more than his season average.

Chatfield coach Steve Schimpeler used nine players in the first quarter, but the Buffaloes had more solid contributions throughout.

Ryan Murphy had half of Chatfield's eight three-pointers and led the Chargers with 17 points. Brian Kenshalo, the Chargers' leading scorer, was shut out until the fourth quarter and had only eight points, half his average.

Senior Ryan Beigie added 15 points and led the Chargers with six rebounds.

A late surge from Kenshalo and Corey Collins brought Chatfield to 12 points.
