Navarez, Harris lead 14ers to road victory

Manuel Navarez scored 24 points and Mike Harris added 17 points and 14 rebounds to help the NBA Development League's Colorado 14ers to a 101-88 victory Thursday against the Austin Toros in Texas.

RAPIDS SIGNING Costa Rican midfielder Yherland McDonald has signed a contract with Major League Soccer's Colorado Rapids.

McDonald, 20, has played for Costa Rica's Under-17 and Under-20 national teams and also played for Norwegian first-division team Fredrikstad.

TRACK ELITE Adams State's Nick Lara (men's track athlete), Reu-ben Chebon-Mwei (men's freshman), TiaNiecia Mosley (women's field athlete) and Damon Martin (men's and women's coach) took the indoor track season awards from the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.

Colorado Mines runners Heather Beresford was named top women's track athlete and Western State's Domonique Bingham was named the top women's freshman.

In other honors:

University of Colorado runners Brent Vaughn and Jenny Barringer were named the athletes of the week at the Boulder school.

Colorado Mammoth transition player Nenad Gajic was named the rookie of the month by the National Lacrosse League.

Mammoth goalie Gee Nash was named the player of the month for February.

Mammoth forward Gavin Prout was chosen to serve as a captain for the Western Division in the NLL All-Star Game on March 10.

KING QUALIFIER Vail skier Chris Del Bosco qualified for this weekend's Jeep King of the Mountain championships in Telluride.

Ward's Alexis Bennett, Centennial's Marguerite Thorp and Steamboat Springs' Justin Glick also will compete.

TENNIS PICKS Rhona Kaczmar-czyk, a Denver resident who was named Female Open Player of the Year for 2006 by the Colorado Tennis Association, has been selected captain of the U.S. women's tennis team in the Young Cup International tennis competition near Antalya, Turkey, next month.

The Young Cup is for women aged 40 and older and was won by the U.S. in 2006 in Durban, South Africa.

Willie Dann, of Denver, has been chosen for the U.S. team in the Italia Cup team tournament for men 35 and over in Turkey.

Susan Wright, of Grand Junction, will play for the U.S. team in the Maria Bueno Cup for women 50 and over, also in Turkey.
