NUMBERS GAME

2 Canadian-born pitchers have started an Opening Day game in the majors - Ferguson Jenkins 11 times and Ryan Dempster twice (2001 and 2002 with Florida). There are three candidates this season - Oakland right-hander Rich Harden, Baltimore left- hander Erik Bedard and Rockies left-hander Jeff Francis, who worked two shutout innings Thursday. He gave up one hit, an infield single by Joe Crede.

ON HOLD

The Rockies won't see Arizona left-hander Randy Johnson in either series they play the Diamondbacks in April.

Johnson, 43, who underwent back surgery in October, said after his first bullpen session of spring training Thursday he hoped he could join the rotation by late April. The Rockies open the season against Arizona at Coors Field on April 2-4 and visit Arizona on April 13-15.

"The projected target date from (the doctor) was sometime in May," Johnson said. "I'd still like to think sometime in April. When, I don't know, but I think I'm taking the appropriate steps and everything is coming along."
