Doherty muzzles feisty Brighton

Published March 2, 2007 at midnight

COLORADO SPRINGS - The final score doesn't indicate the danger Doherty faced Thursday night at World Arena.

But it does reflect the way the Spartans rose to the challenge.

Doherty withstood Brighton's first-half charge to deliver a 77-52 victory, which sends the No. 1 seed from the Ray Ball Region to Saturday's round of eight to face Monarch (19-6).

Give credit to the Bulldogs, though, for being the first lower-seeded team in two days of state basketball at the site not to fold in the first quarter.

Unfortunately for the No. 5 Bulldogs, their meltdown came in the third. Doherty (23-2) held a 32-28 lead at halftime, but the Bulldogs committed turnovers on four consecutive possessions to start the second half. Doherty cashed in on all of them to separate from Brighton.

Bryse Velasquez sparked Doherty, as it made its first six shots of the third quarter. By the time the Bulldogs (18-7) finally scored, Doherty held a 45-28 lead and never looked back.

"We came out and put it on them, and that was the first time that I felt like we were in control," said Velasquez, who scored 10 of his 16 points in the third. "They beat us over the summer, so we were ready to come out and play hard against them."

Chris Deans' three-point shooting and Martrell Jackson's post play helped Brighton jump to a 17-16 first-quarter lead, and with the Bulldogs clicking on offense, it seemed like they wouldn't go away.

But Doherty's fast break and the performance of 6-foot-9 center Garrett Fiddler wore Brighton down. Fiddler scored a game-best 24 points and blocked six shots to win the battle inside with the 6-10 Jackson.

"I was happy that we were able to come out strong in the second half and build our lead because I didn't want to be close to a team that dangerous down the stretch," Fiddler said.
