Tuomi's poor start hardly a bad omen for Horizon

LOVELAND - When the final buzzer sounded Wednesday night at the Budweiser Events Center, Horizon's Hannah Tuomi let out a big sigh of relief.
Tuomi just had endured one of the most frustrating games of her illustrious high school career, but somehow the top-seeded Hawks found a way to outlast Chaparral 58-45 in a brutal third-round game of the Class 5A girls state tournament.
Tuomi, an All-Colorado forward who has signed with Vanderbilt, was in foul trouble throughout and never found an offensive rhythm. She spent almost the entire first half on the bench and didn't have a point or a rebound in the first two quarters, yet she finished with 14 points and 18 rebounds.
"It was a very frustrating game," said Tuomi, who made only two field goals. "It was hard to get back into it at the beginning (of the second half), but then I just hustled and played as hard as I could."
Tuomi did most of her damage from the free-throw line, making 10-of-13. But it was her work on the boards that allowed Horizon (21-4) to pull away from the Wolverines (17- 8) in the fourth quarter.
"You're not going to shut Tuomi down, she's too active . . ." Chaparral coach Tony Speights said. "You've got to put a body on her and be willing to get physical."
That job fell to the Wolverines' Nicki Reeves, who did a good job defensively. But Tuomi eventually wore down Chaparral.
Tuomi, the second-leading scorer in 5A, picked up her second personal foul when she was called for a charge less than 3 minutes into the game.
With their catalyst sidelined, the Hawks tried to hold on and get to the third. They were able to take a 21-20 lead into halftime.
"It's a team sport, so even when I'm not out there, we should be able to win anyway," Tuomi said.
With 16 points, Nikki Trujillo led all scorers. Sarah Cleveland led Chaparral with 12.
