Seeds of discontent fueling the Colts
Pueblo South is on mission after perceived snub
Published March 1, 2007 at midnight
Pueblo South felt some frustration over the boys Class 4A state tournament seeding process.
So, the Colts took it out on Greeley Central in the second round. Host Pueblo South beat the Wildcats 71-33 Saturday, the most decisive victory so far in the tournament.
The seeding committee, thinking the Colts had two losses this season, used the wrong record to determine the Colts' seeding and gave Pueblo South (23-1) the No. 2 seed in the Bill Weimar Region.
That snub, along with the memory of the Colts' upset loss to Widefield in the second round last season, has Pueblo South playing with renewed passion.
"I think we just talk more than anything about playing with a sense of urgency that I didn't think we brought to the tournament last year," coach Dave Lockett said. "And basically we have the same kids back."
It all adds up to a great matchup in the next round, where the Colts will face No. 3 Windsor at Ralston Valley on Friday. Each team likes to run and both shoot the three-pointer as well as any team in the state.
"I think they are a lot like us," Lockett said. "They are big . . . bigger than we are, so hopefully we can use our quickness a little bit."
The Weimar Region is one of three 4A regions where the seedings have played out perfectly, with the top four seeds still alive. In the Ron Shavlik Region, though, upsets reigned.
The biggest upset of the tournament so far happened in Alamosa on Saturday when No. 7 Conifer shocked No. 2 Alamosa with a 68-63 victory.
The Lobos, who never had won a playoff game before this season, now will face No. 3 Thomas Jefferson, the two-time defending state champion.
First-year Conifer coach Jeff Debuhr, an assistant at Evergreen before this season, said the Lobos (15-10) got good preparation for state by playing in the 4A Jefferson County League.
Three Jeffco teams, Ralston Valley, D'Evelyn and Conifer, are in the Sweet 16.
"It was a very strong league," Debuhr said. "We ended the season playing four of our last five against Golden, Ralston, D'Evelyn and Evergreen. That definitely got us playoff-ready."
Also in the Shavlik Region, No. 5 Fossil Ridge knocked out 20-game winner and fourth-seeded Cherokee Trail with a 79-76 overtime victory. Junior Cody Mivshek scored 29 points to lead the SaberCats into the Sweet 16, where they will be at No. 1 Widefield on Friday.
In the Jim Baggot Region, which will be played at Broomfield, D'Evelyn will face Steamboat Springs for the second time this season as the No. 2 Sailors put their 18-game winning streak on the line.
D'Evelyn was the last Colorado team to beat Steamboat Springs when it traveled to Steamboat and came away with a 62-41 victory Dec. 9.
D'Evelyn coach Troy Pachner said his team has a lot of confidence facing the Sailors again.
"We love the Steamboat matchup," he said. "We respect them, and coach (Kelly) Meek is one of those epic guys in this state with all his wins, but we're 5-0 against them and we plan on getting another one."
No. 1 Harrison and No. 2 Lincoln will try to avoid upsets in the Guy Gibbs Region at Harrison for a possible matchup Saturday. The Saturday winners will move on to the semifinals next week at Boulder's Coors Events Center.
