Rollover kills trucker near Trinidad

Published March 1, 2007 at midnight

The driver of a water tanker truck lost control on a steep embankment in a wildlife area Tuesday and rolled his truck 200 feet down the side of the hill.

Kent D. Kelley, 41, of Walsenburg died after being ejected as the truck rolled several times.

The accident happened on an unnamed road 2 miles southwest of Las Animas County Road 31.9, about 21 miles west of Trinidad, the State Patrol said.

The vehicle was on a steep downgrade in a left hand curve when it lost control and went off the right side of the road. The violence of the rollover separated the water tank from the body of the truck.

Drugs or alcohol are not suspected, but speed may have been a contributing factor.
