Colorado man speaks in Washington in support of union bill

WASHINGTON - A Colorado man joined Democratic members of Congress on Wednesday to rally support for a bill to make it easier for workers to unionize.
Errol Hohrein, a boilermaker from Windsor, spoke at the Rayburn House Office Building on behalf of the Employee Free Choice Act.
"You're looking at the face of America," said Hohrein, 57. "You're going to have workers riled if something doesn't happen in this country."
He was joined by five Democratic congressmen, including Rep. George Miller, D-Calif., and House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, D-Md.
Hohrein, who said he was fired a few days after he and his colleagues voted to unionize, said that Congress needs to act before many Americans are forced out of their jobs.
Sponsored by Miller, the Employee Free Choice Act would amend the National Labor Relations Act to allow workers to form a union once they obtained written authorization from a majority of employees.
Under current law, after organizers get enough signatures, an election with secret ballots is held to decide if there will be a union. Bill proponents say that employers use this step to stall the process. But Rep. Eric Cantor, R-Va., opposes the bill, saying it "removes the freedom of choice and the secret ballot of individual workers."
