Style Matters: Bucks & trends

Know when to spend and when to save on spring clothes

Published March 1, 2007 at midnight

Spring fashions run the gamut this year, from the wearable - the new wide-leg slacks - to the absurd - metallic leggings. We love having so many choices. Here are our suggestions on what to splurge on and what to spend less than $100 on this season.

There's something for everyone, so ladies, start your engines.

Splurge!

THE TREND: Dresses. Whether its empire, wrapped, shift or drop waist, there's a dress style out there that flatters your figure. Since the color "nude" (skin-tone beige) is so popular, snap up a dress in this timeless color and wear it for many seasons to come.

THE TREND: White is right. This season, invest in a collection of white accessories: a large handbag, white-rimmed sunglasses and the newest white hot accessory - a watch with a white band.

THE TREND: Trench coats. These are all over the stores in all lengths and in basic neutrals and trendy metallics. You should have no problem finding one of these classics.

THE TREND: White accessories. Big is still beautiful when it comes to handbags. Look for over-size styles with chic details such as gold hardware or funky clasps.

Save!

THE TREND: Bold prints, florals and patterns. Not a Style Matters favorite, but something designers appear to love. We say they'll be here and gone in a flash, so don't dole out your hard- earned cash on this trend.

THE TREND: Wide-leg jeans. Yay! We now have an alternative to the super- skinny jean. Wide-leg pants are flattering to most women; they balance hips and hide flaws. With these jeans it's the fit, not the price. You'll see us wearing them, for sure.

THE TREND: Transparency. Wait till you see all the Lucite and see-through shoes and handbags. Great - everyone will be able to see your wadded-up tissues and parking tickets.
