Barczuk sparks Warriors

Dakota Ridge fails to find answer for Arapahoe guard

LOVELAND - Amy Barczuk had seen enough.

The Arapahoe guard had watched the team's double-digit lead against Dakota Ridge whittled to one Wednesday entering the fourth quarter in the Sweet 16 round of the Class 5A girls basketball tournament.

So, the sophomore took matters into her own hands.

She scored the first eight points of the final quarter, then continued to dominate as the Warriors coasted to a 61-46 win at the Budweiser Events Center.

Barczuk scored 14 of her game-best 23 points in the fourth, when she nailed three of her four three- pointers.

"I wouldn't say three-pointers are the strong part of my game," said Barczuk, who scored 24 points in a 61-54 win against the Eagles in the regular season. "But something had to be done."

Dakota Ridge (18-6), the second seed in the Sharon Wilch Region, trimmed an 11-point halftime deficit to 40-39 entering the final quarter, but Barczuk quickly sandwiched two three-pointers around a putback and the Warriors reasserted control.

Diana Hentschel scored seven of her 14 points in the fourth as Arapahoe (19-6) blitzed the Eagles 21-7.

"Our energy just left us," said Dakota Ridge's Brooke Pendergraft, who scored 10 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. "We dug ourselves a deep hole and came out of it, but then (Barczuk) hit a couple shots and we just dropped."

Behind Jennelle Branting, the Eagles outscored Arapahoe 20-10 in the third. They trailed 30-19 at halftime after Barczuk's sister, Sarah, a senior, hit a buzzer-beating three-pointer.

But it was the younger Barczuk who sent Jefferson County League champion Dakota Ridge home for the season.

"I wanted to play for my sister a little bit and take over the game," Amy Barczuk said.
