Goucher in world 5,000-meter final

Former University of Colorado athlete Adam Goucher qualified for the men's 5,000 meter final at the World Track and Field Championships in Osaka, Japan, despite miscounting laps and placing eighth in his heat Thursday.

"I don't think I've ever done that," Goucher said of his error. "It was a very big novice mistake. My legs got heavy with 400 meters to go. . . . I didn't think that there was going to be another five guys going past me."

ARBUCKLE LEADS Colorado Springs resident Dave Arbuckle retained a three-shot lead after two rounds of the Colorado Senior Open golf tournament at Green Valley Ranch Golf Club.

Arbuckle has a two-round total of 134, three shots in front of Boise resident Jeff Thomsen.

SKYHAWKS ROLL Kieran Hall and Columbine High School graduate Paul Sanchez scored goals to help the Fort Lewis men's soccer team (2-0) to a 2-0 victory against Mesa State (0-2) in Grand Junction.

Elsewhere in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference:

Kayla Mitchell scored in the seventh minute to lift the Colorado School of Mines women's soccer team (1-2) to a 1-0 victory against Winona (Minn.) State (1-1) in Golden.

Julie Green-McFarland recorded 14 kills, but the Metro State volleyball team (1-4) lost 30-20, 30-25, 25-30, 25-30, 15-11 to the University of Mary (3-2) at the Auraria Events Center on Wednesday night.

The University of Colorado at Colorado Springs men's golf team was picked to win the league title in a poll of RMAC coaches.

Colorado Mines officially will open its new Student Recreation Center at 3 p.m. today.

NLL DRAFT The National Lacrosse League will conduct its 2007 Entry Draft at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Pepsi Center.

Admission and parking are free. A combine game featuring potential draftees will be held at 6 tonight.

ANUNDSEN, DAMICO FALTER Columbine High School graduate Sara Anundsen and North Carolina teammate Jenna Long, the reigning NCAA women's doubles champions, lost to Poland's Klaudia Jans and Alicia Rosolska, 6-2, 6-1 in their first-round doubles match this week at the U.S. Open in New York.

Parker resident Kellen Damico and doubles partner Nathaniel Schnugg lost their first-round doubles match to Sweden's Jonas Bjorkman and Belarus' Max Miryni 6-4, 6-2.
