NUMBERS GAME

26 starts and a 16-10 record for Boston's Tim Wakefield. Wakefield, whose next start is tonight, is attempting to become the fifth pitcher since 1920 to gain a decision in every start he makes in a season. The four who have done so are Burleigh Grimes (21-18 in 1923), Dazzy Vance (22-9 in 1925), Red Ruffing (21-7 in 1939) and Lum Harris (11-15 in 1942).

THIRD STRIKE

Phil Garner's firing by the Astros this week was the third time he has been let go as a major league manager. And all three times, the team's general manager also was fired. This week, Tim Purpura went with Garner. In 1999, Milwaukee fired Garner and Sal Bando; in 2002, Detroit fired Garner and Randy Smith.

HE SAID IT

"This series probably put in their heads that they need to be worried about the wild card, not the division. . . . It's just leaving no doubt that we're a better team at this moment."

Orlando Cabrera, shortstop, on the Angels sweeping the Mariners this week to take charge in the American League West.
