Manning, Colts taking it easy in Cincinnati

Indianapolis will rest starters ahead of season opener

Published August 31, 2007 at midnight

CINCINNATI - The last time the Colts visited southwestern Ohio for the final preseason game, their starters could have driven over in a minivan and had plenty of room left for all their equipment.

Their return tonight won't be different.

The Colts will give most of their starters the game off tonight at Paul Brown Stadium, keeping with coach Tony Dungy's practice of keeping his best players out of harm's way in the final preseason game.

"You certainly could see some," Dungy said. "There are some guys who need to play a little bit. We've got some first- and second-year players that need some time."

At this point, the defending Super Bowl champions are buying time until their opener against New Orleans.

That game will come Thursday night - another reason not to let the starters do too much.

STARR EXTORTION BID: An 82-year-old Texas woman who pleaded guilty to trying to extort $2 million from Hall of Fame quarterback Bart Starr was sentenced to one year of probation.

A federal judge in San Antonio ordered Ruby Y. Young not to have any contact with Starr or his family or contact the media about an alleged relationship she had with the two-time Super Bowl Most Valuable Player in 1960.

Court documents show Young sent a 3 1/2-page letter to Starr in October 2006.

It read, in part, "And now, the time has come for you to pay - to pay for the many injuries you caused me."

Young pleaded guilty in June. Starr, 73, was MVP of the first two Super Bowls for the Green Bay Packers.

ETC.: Rams offensive lineman Todd Steussie broke his left foot in the first half Thursday night against the Chiefs. Steussie, 36, is entering his 14th season and has missed only two games since joining the league in 1994. . . . Bears tight end Greg Olsen left with a knee injury late in the second quarter against the Browns. The rookie was injured when he was tackled after catching a short pass from Kyle Orton. . . . The Patriots signed veteran punter Chris Hanson and released first-year punter Danny Baugher. The 30-year-old Hanson has 428 punts for 18,347 yards with the Packers and the Jaguars. . . . The Redskins re-signed running back Dee Brown and placed running back Derrick Blaylock on injured reserve with a heel injury. . . . 49ers coach Mike Nolan and Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio will wear Joseph Abboud brand suits at home games this season, licensed by Reebok. Nolan and Del Rio last season received permission from the league to wear suits instead of the more casual athletic apparel that was supplied by Reebok.
