STYLE MATTERS: Uncovering gems for local shoppers
Published August 30, 2007 at midnight
Judie and Evelinda: The kids have gone back to school. Yeah! We mean, we already miss them sooo much. To fill our void, we've gone shopping. Here are some places we visited recently that might be new to you.
Hannah by Design Tamarac Square, 7777 E. Hampden Ave.; 303-888-3849
Looking for some amazing jewelry? We always are, so when we heard about this store we ran right over.
A bead collector for more than 30 years, Hannah Levine has shown her jewelry in Colorado and New Mexico and holds private showings in New York, Chicago and San Francisco. Her necklaces are one-of-a-kind masterpieces made of a variety of semi-precious stones, silver, vermeil and glass beads. Prices range from $90 for a bracelet up to $650 for a necklace.
Levine recently started a service for clients who want to update their antique or heirloom jewelry, incorporating their pieces into contemporary designs. Originally, the store was located in Cherry Creek North. The move to Tamarac is a boon for southeast Denver shoppers.
Kamala Belmar, 7240 W. Alaska Drive; 303-935-3337
What a find! This jewel of a local family-owned jewelry store opened about a year ago, carrying a mix of local, national and international artists.
Kamala specializes in unique handmade American jewelry and decorative items. The store carries lots of Southwestern and Indian jewelry as well as more contemporary and one-of-a-kind pieces. Prices range from $10 for handmade pill boxes to $7,000 for gold opal inlay jewelry. Prices average $50 to $200.
If you're at DIA, check out their store, Colorado Collection, in Concourse B.
Loft 22 1410 Larimer St.; 303-893-5010
Sisters and Steamboat Springs natives Kelly and Brittin Asbury have realized their dream of opening a boutique together. They chose the name Loft 22 because their family members all have the number two in their birthdays.
This small, bright, colorful shop on trendy Larimer Square carries clothing that ranges from casual to Saturday date night. Their most popular lines are Kenzie Girl, French Connection, BCBG Girls and Max and Cleo, a division of BCBG with a lower price point. Most dresses are about $100. Also, look for jeans, T-shirts, camis and jewelry by local designer J. Gilbert.
When the sisters go to market in Los Angeles and Las Vegas, they like to find little-known start-up lines. One of their favorites is the custom-made unisex steel belt buckles by Foster Weld ($70-$120).
It's refreshing to see affordable pricing on Larimer. Plus, we love a boutique that also sells shoes. Loft 22 carries heels and platforms by Naughty Monkey ($68 to $88) and flats by Groove ($39 in six bright colors). Shoe sizes run 6 to 10.
