Arbuckle early leader at state Senior Open
Colorado Springs resident Dave Arbuckle finished with a 7-under-par 65 on Wednesday in the first round of the Health-ONE Colorado Senior Open, which endured an afternoon rain delay at Green Valley Ranch Golf Club in Denver.
Joe Huber, of Show Low, Ariz., was three shots off the lead at 68, while Gregg Jones, of Colorado Springs, and 2005 champion Mike Zaremba, of Pueblo West, were in a five-way tie at 69.
The second of three rounds begins at 7:30 a.m. today. Admission is free.
SKY SOX MUSTER ONE HIT Shane Komine threw a one-hitter in seven innings with nine strikeouts for the host Sacramento River Cats, who shut out the Colorado Springs Sky Sox 4-0 in a Pacific Coast League game. Marc Kaiser suffered the loss.
CROSS COUNTRY RANKINGS The Adams State women's cross country team enters the season ranked No. 1 in Division II. Western State is No. 3.
University of Colorado-Colorado Springs is ranked 11th.
On the men's side, Adams State is ranked No. 2, Western State is No. 3 and Colorado Mines is No. 7. Metro State, at No. 15, is ranked nationally for the first time in program history.
MESA STATE WOMEN WIN Christina Pauley scored two goals within four minutes and Lauren Sell added a goal and two assists as the Mesa State women's soccer team (3-0-1) won 6-1 against Adams State (1-3) at Murphy Field in Alamosa.
COUGARS LOSE THREE STRAIGHT The Colorado Christian volleyball team (0-5) couldn't keep up with the University of Mary, losing 30-19, 30-25, 30-28 at the Cougar Event Center.
In a later match, Mary (3-2) beat Metro State 30-20, 30-25, 25-30, 24-30, 15-11 in a nonconference match in Denver.
Julie Green-McFarland led the Roadrunners (1-4) with 14 kills.
DU GOLFERS RANKED The University of Denver women's golf team is ranked No. 18 in the Golf World/NGCA Division I preseason coaches' poll.
Pioneers returning sophomore Stephanie Sherlock was named a top 50 female player to watch by the magazine.
In men's Division II rankings, CU-Colorado Springs finished out of the top 25, receiving enough votes to tie for 35th in the division.
HILL LEADS NANOOKS Doherty High School graduate Jessica Hill led the Alaska Nanooks with 22 kills in a 30-24, 26-30, 30-25, 23-30, 15-10 volleyball win against Armstrong Atlantic on Tuesday in Fairbanks, Alaska.
