Poll: 58 percent don't want Vick in league

Published August 30, 2007 at midnight

WASHINGTON - Michael Vick should not be allowed to play in the NFL again, most professional football fans said in a poll that underscored how far the Falcons quarterback's star has fallen.

In addition, an overwhelming majority of fans want him to serve prison time, according to the Gallup Poll.

According to the survey, 58 percent said Vick should not be allowed to play in the NFL anymore. In addition, 35 percent said they believe he should serve a long prison sentence, 51 percent said they favored a short one and 12 percent said they believe he should not serve any time.

NEVER HEARD OF VICK: The woman who paid $7,400 on eBay for 22 Vick football cards that were chewed up and slobbered on by two Missouri dogs, said she hadn't heard of the player before he was indicted for dogfighting.

But Laura Norton-Dye, 40, of Cape Girardeau, Mo., who has incurable gastrointestinal cancer, wanted to send the message that local animal shelters need help - and she challenged Vick to donate money himself.

STRAHAN UNDECIDED: Michael Strahan still has not made a decision on whether to play for the Giants or retire after 14 seasons and seven trips to the Pro Bowl.

Strahan's 132 1/2 sacks are tops among active players. He set an NFL single-season record with 22 1/2 sacks in 2001.

CLEANING UP IMAGE: Concerned by growing uneasiness among fans and marketers about athletes gone wild, the league is embarking on an effort to burnish its brand image by accentuating the positive aspects of the on- and off-field lives of its players.

In a television and online campaign that is to begin today, the league and its advertising agency, BBDO Worldwide, are borrowing the playbook, so to speak, of industries such as Big Oil and the big drug companies, which have relied on the magic of Madison Avenue to redeem their public images.

ETC.: Former Chiefs kick returner Dante Hall shied away from any revenge talk as the Rams prepared to meet the Chiefs tonight. Hall, who returned 11 kicks for touchdowns while with the Chiefs said, "(Coach Herman Edwards) chose to get rid of me, and I can't really have any hard feelings. What good is it going to do?" . . . Darren Sproles, a 5-foot-6, 181-pound running back from Kansas State who is coming back after a broken ankle in 2006, was given a vote of confidence by Chargers coach Norv Turner. "I would say Darren has a chance of helping us win football games this year, yes," Turner said. . . . On the second anniversary of Hurricane Katrina striking Louisiana, Super Bowl XLI Most Valuable Player Peyton Manning of the Colts called upon tourists to visit New Orleans. "People around the country need to know (the city) can still use their help and support," Manning said. . . . Punter Scott Player, the Cardinals' longest-tenured veteran in seasons and games played, was released by the team. . . . Former Raiders quarterback Todd Marinovich, whose career ended in a mire of drug abuse, is facing a possible prison term after a weekend arrest in Orange County, Calif.
