More details sought on Civic Center museum plan

A new museum in Civic Center fits the city's master plan for that site. But a park official said Wednesday the city must know more about a proposal to move the Colorado History Museum there before signing off on the building.
"We can say that a cultural facility is consistent with our planning objectives," said Helen Kuykendall, Civic Center project manager, during the second informational meeting on the historical society's need to find a new home.
"They're asking us about the feasibility of a museum, and we can clearly say that's possible," Kuykendall said. "What's not so clear is the idea of constructing a building. We can say the museum seems like a great idea. But as far as the master plan goes, we need to make sure we're preserving green space as identified in that plan."
Gathering more information is the point of the meetings the historical society will hold through the year, said new president Ed Nichols.
"From our perspective, we can add something to the city in Civic Center we can't do in any other location," Nichols said after the meeting. "This process is helpful in defining the right answer."
The historical society has studied eight sites on which to build, and narrowed the list to three: The city's permit center site, Civic Center and land at East Colfax Avenue and Lincoln Street.
