From barely-there makeup to lips so red they could stop traffic; from slicked-back buns to straight, long locks, fall's runways gave a glimpse of the season's hottest beauty and hair trends.
Here's a look.
Dark eyes
The look: From thick, black-winged eyeliner, a la of-the-moment singer Amy Winehouse, to smoky shadows in shades of brown and gray, many makeup artists chose to emphasize the eyes during their fall runway shows.
Tip from a pro: Makeup artist Dick Page helped create the look at Michael Kors. "The eyes were lined with gunmetal gray to create a blue-black effect (keep the line sharp so it doesn't look as if you have two black eyes). I popped false eyelashes on the outer corners," he writes in September's Allure magazine.
A new twist
The look: Simple and sleek, the bun caught the fancy of many designers. But make no mistake, this look is anything but schoolmarm. Perfectly pulled back or messy, on top of the head or at the nape of the neck, it's easy and fashion-forward.
Tips from the pros: To get the look of a messy chignon with face-framing pieces, InStyle.com says to begin by parting hair slightly off-center. Next, curl small sections of hair with a large-barrel iron. Twist hair into a low bun, letting pieces fall out, and secure with a rubber band. Gently pull out face-framing pieces and add a rhinestone hairclip or other accessory next to the bun.
In the nude
The look: Barely-there makeup is the new neutral for fall. Whether matte or dewy, skin, lips and eyes blend seamlessly to let your clothes take center stage.
Tip from the pros: Use the monotone palette as an opportunity to play up your features with textures: Go for a velvety shadow on the eyes, a translucent powder on the skin and a dewy balm on the lips. Fill in your brows just slightly with a powder that matches your natural hair color and set them with a wax or gel for a subtle sheen, says the September issue of Marie Claire.
Seeing red
The look: The classic red lip gets a modern take with creamy lipsticks or glosses.
Tips from the pros: Smashbox pro makeup artist Charlie Green offers this advice in the September issue of People StyleWatch:
Choose a pigment-rich shade. "The more pigment, the less it'll fade."
Prep lips. At least 10 minutes before applying lipstick, coat lips with moisturizer or balm.
Apply carefully. Using a lip brush, start at the center of your lips and move outward. Finish by gently blotting color at the edges.
Straight and narrow
The look: Heat up those flat irons, ladies. When runway hair wasn't twisted into a bun or pulled into a ponytail, it was long, straight and super shiny.
Tip from the pros: "Mix a dab of hair balm and hair serum in your palms; rub onto damp hair. Run a wet/dry flat iron over ¾-inch sections to smooth. Then roll up hair in jumbo Velcro rollers. Do your whole head. After 15 minutes, remove rollers, finger-comb and spritz with shine spray," reports Glamour magazine in the September issue.
