No deal in DPS teacher contract talks
Published August 29, 2007 at midnight
Two days of contracts talks between Denver Public Schools and its teachers union ended late Tuesday with no agreement.
Kim Ursetta, president of the Denver Classroom Teachers Association, blamed a "hard-line take it or leave it" attitude on salary negotiations for 2007-08.
She'll take the district's most recent offer back to her members "to determine if they will take another year of losing ground to surrounding school districts," according to a news release e-mailed to media at 1:02 a.m. today.
Ursetta said she will also investigate other "options" with members and the state Department of Labor. Union leaders must file notice of a labor dispute with the state department if they want to consider a strike.
Denver teachers have not walked out of schools to strike since 1994.
DPS Superintendent Michael Bennet could not immediately be reached
for comment. DPS board members are meeting today in executive session
about the contract.
