I-25 flooding strands drivers in Pueblo
Published August 29, 2007 at midnight
Torrential rain flooded parts of Interstate 25 and stranded multiple vehicles near downtown Pueblo this morning.
Pueblo police Sgt. Kim Wittrup said heavy rain began about 9 a.m. and quickly created pools in the ramps at the Ilex Street and Central Avenue exits.
The highway reopened later this morning but the Central Avenue exit remained closed.
No injuries were reported.
Wittrup said a couple of motorists became stranded when they "tried to push past the water" on the ramps.
"Cars go deeper than what they should," he said of the knee-high water.
Rescuers were dispatched but most motorists got out on their own, Wittrup said.
No damage to homes or businesses was reported.
"Unfortunately, when we get heavy rain, it's a common occurrence,"
Wittrup said.
