A troubled life

Jan. 9, 1968: Kenton Drew Astin is born Jerry Buckley.



Unknown date: Jerry Buckley begins using the name Sin Metri.



July 9, 1999: Buckley legally changes his name to Kenton Drew Astin.



March 31, 2001: Astin stabs Dylan Trembley at the Salvation Army store in Longmont, then tells police his name is Dylan Klebold, the name of one of the Columbine gunmen.



Sept. 21, 2001: Astin is found not guilty by reason of insanity and committed to the Colorado Mental Health Institute at Pueblo.



2004: An assessment finds that Astin is at "moderate risk to violently reoffend."



Oct. 25, 2005: The Colorado Department of Human Services places Astin in a halfway house in Boulder.



Oct. 10, 2006: Astin is hired as a cashier at the Alferd Packer Grill on the University of Colorado's Boulder campus.



Nov. 21, 2006: Steve Schoenmakers, superintendent of the state hospital, concludes that Astin is no longer dangerous and asks for his "conditional release."



Jan. 23, 2007: Boulder County District Attorney Mary Lacy opposes Astin's release, noting that he has not had a risk assessment since 2004.



Feb. 26, 2007: A new risk assessment is conducted and finds that Astin is a "low risk to engage in violent recidivism."



March 20, 2007: Lacy's office drops her opposition to the release.



April 6, 2007: A judge grants Astin's release.



April 10, 2007: Astin's job at CU ends.



Monday: Astin allegedly stabs a CU freshman, then himself, on campus.
