Woman trapped, rescued while tubing Platte

Published August 28, 2007 at midnight

A woman who was tubing in the South Platte River was pulled to safety by firefighters Monday after she became trapped in the chute of a water treatment plant.

Sheridan firefighters evaluated the 45-year-old woman after she was pulled to safety, but she declined treatment, fire Capt. Patrick Conroy said.

Shortly before 1:30 p.m. a passer-by on the bike trail that runs along the river spotted a man who appeared stranded on a wall and holding a rope, fire Chief Ron Carter said. The passer-by called for help.

When firefighters arrived, they found that on the other end of the man's rope was the innertube that his female companion was using, the chief said.

The woman was trapped in a chute just north of West Union Avenue, between South Federal Boulevard and South Santa Fe Drive, and that was part of the Englewood water treatment facility.

Sheridan firefighters requested the assistance of the Littleton Fire Department, which has a dive rescue team. The dive team used a raft to reach the woman.
