SIMONS: Eldorado's latest

Published August 28, 2007 at midnight

Prepare for long lines at the booth for Boulder County-based Eldorado Artesian Springs bottled water at this weekend's Taste of Colorado festival. That's where the home crowd will have the first opportunity to taste Eldorado's new line of organic, vitamin- enhanced spring water.

The new beverages come in four flavors: pink guava, black raspberry, strawberry-blueberry and blood orange. They're made with water from Eldorado's artesian spring and certified-organic vitamins B and C, cane sugar, flavorings and colors.

"No other members of the public have tried them, other than a handful of market testers," said Eldorado marketing director Jeremy Martin. "And judging from the enthusiasm we've had from that, and from the grocery industry's reaction, I think it's going to be a really hot seller."

Martin says the enthusiasm level has been bolstered by Pepsi's admission that bottles of its Aquafina contain filtered tap water.

Eldorado's water, on the other hand, comes directly out of the spring that gives the resort of Eldorado Springs its name. And Martin is pretty sure that the new product is the only organic vitamin water available in Colorado.

Available is the operative word here. Martin says it's not expected to reach the shelves of Colorado markets until mid-September, where it will sell for $1.50 to $1.60 per 20-ounce bottle.

At the Taste of Colorado, a bottle will cost six tickets, or $3.75. (A large portion of the Taste's food proceeds helps fund the festival.)

? Perhaps you've noticed the chile roasters that have begun springing up in vacant lots all over town. Anita Edge, who runs the denvergreenchili.com Web site, says Labor Day weekend is the traditional kickoff for Denver's chile wars.

"For example, Mile High Chile at Federal and 14th is giving a free quesadilla to each family member with the purchase of a bushel of chiles," Edge said. "And a few blocks north at Federal and 25th, the Jack-n-Grill is giving away a $2 breakfast burrito with each bushel of chiles."

For more details, go to Edge's Web site, which continues to update the list of vendors and their deals.
