Three keys
Key moments in the Rockies' 4-1 loss to the San Francisco Giants at AT&T Park on Monday night:
1 Right-handed pitcher Jorge Julio gave up four singles and a double to the six hitters he faced, giving up three runs in the eighth inning.
2 Right fielder Brad Hapwe, who had only two home runs and 37 strikeouts in his 97 previous at-bats against left-handed pitchers this year, homered on a 3-2 pitch from the Giants' Barry Zito to lead off the fifth and tie the score 1-1.
3 The Rockies' short-handed bench - they are carrying 13 relievers because of recent struggles by the starters - was exposed. With two out and two on in the seventh, left-handed-hitting rookie Ian Stewart pinch hit and struck out against Zito. The only other players on the bench were Cory Sullivan, a left-handed hitter, Kazuo Matsui, a switch hitter, and backup catcher Chris Iannetta, a right-handed hitter.
Etc.
Matt Holliday's first-inning single extended his career-best hitting streak to 17 games, the longest active streak in the majors. Derek Jeter (20 games and 19 games) and Ichiro Suzuki (25 games and 19 games) are the only players who have had longer hitting streaks this season. Todd Helton was the most recent Rockies player with a 17-game hitting streak, which he put together in 2003. . . . First baseman Christian Colonel, second baseman Corey Wimberly and outfielder Dexter Fowler are the position players the Rockies will supply the Peoria Javelinas in the Arizona Fall League. The Rockies also have four spots on the Javelinas pitching staff, which are not yet filled. . . . Left-hander Dan Serafini, who returned from Japan and signed with Triple-A Colorado Springs, will pitch in back-to-back games this week and also will be used in situational matchups with left-handed hitters for evaluation by the Rockies, who will determine if he might fit into their plans next season. . . . Shortstop Troy Tulowitzki, a native of Santa Clara, Calif., said he left tickets for 25 family members and friends. . . . Twenty-four of the Rockies' final 31 games are against National League West teams. The only exceptions are four games from Sept. 10-13 in Philadelphia and three games against Florida from Sept. 14-16 at Coors Field.
