A 6 1/2-mile chase ended in the arrest of a man and a woman after Brighton police answered a burglar alarm at an auto sales firm about 5:30 a.m. Monday.

The suspects were identified as Ronald Newman, 27, who told police he was homeless, and Sally Espinosa, 31, of Broomfield.

They were jailed on suspicion of vehicular eluding, resisting arrest, first-degree criminal trespass, second-degree criminal trespass and theft by receiving over $20,000.

When officers answered the alarm at ATM Auto Sales, 189 N. Kuner Road, they saw a man jump into a white pickup driven by a woman, said Brighton police spokesman John Bradley.

The officers gave chase as the pickup headed north on Kuner, crossed U.S. 85 then headed north into Fort Lupton on Weld County Road 27, Bradley said.

The chase ended in the 300 block of First Street in Fort Lupton when the occupants of the truck bailed out, Bradley said.

Brighton police arrested Newman after a short foot pursuit, and Fort Lupton officers later found Espinosa hiding in bushes near where the truck was abandoned, Bradley said.

He said a window had been pried in a building at the car sales firm, windows were broken in three cars and the ignitions were removed on two cars. The truck had been reported stolen, and the license plates also were stolen, Bradley said.

Police were seeking to determine whether property found in the truck belonged to the owner or had been taken elsewhere.
