Campbell wins 100 in a photo finish

Jamaica's Veronica Campbell edged defending champion Lauryn Williams of the United States in a photo finish to capture the women's 100-meter gold medal Monday at the World Track and Field Championships in Osaka, Japan.

Campbell and Williams clocked 11.01 seconds, and it took officials at least five minutes to split them.

"It was a very close race, a very good race," Campbell said. "I'm just overwhelmed right now. I know I had a really good finish. It was so close that I wasn't really sure."

Two top Americans, Tyson Gay in the 200 and Jeremy Wariner in the 400, advanced through qualifying rounds early today.

HAAS TAX CASE NASCAR team owner Gene Haas pleaded guilty to defrauding the government of more than $34 million in taxes.

The 54-year-old owner of Haas Automation and NASCAR's Haas CNC Racing agreed to pay a fine, back taxes and interest totaling more than $70 million.

MOODY CHOICE Florida coach Urban Meyer confirmed former Southern California running back Emmanuel Moody is transferring to the defending national champion.

Before missing the final four games because of a sprained ankle last season, Moody gained 458 yards on 79 carries and finished as USC's second-leading rusher.

CASTILLE ENTERS PLEA Alabama cornerback Simeon Castille, the son of former Broncos defensive back Jeremiah Castille, pleaded not guilty to a Tuscaloosa, Ala., charge he shouted to passengers in a car and challenged them to a fight.

CRIMSON TIDE PLAYERS SUSPENDED Alabama receiver Keith Brown and linebacker Prince Hall have been suspended for the opener against Western Carolina for unspecified violations of team rules.

GUILTY PLEA A man charged with fatally shooting University of Kentucky football player Trent DiGiuro in 1994 pleaded guilty to manslaughter in Lexington, Ky.

Shane Ragland was convicted of murder in 2002 and sentenced to 30 years, but he won a new trial after the state Supreme Court agreed the prosecutor had made an inappropriate comment during the trial and used inadmissible evidence.

In the plea deal, Ragland was sentenced to time served - eight years in prison.

EX-RECEIVER DIES Former Louisiana Tech All-American receiver Tommy Spinks, who teamed with Terry Bradshaw to form one of the most feared tandems in college football, died Sunday at his home in Arlington, Texas, after a short illness. He was 58.

SILVER STARS SHINE Vickie Johnson scored an easy layup on a pass from former Colorado State athlete Becky Hammon with half a second remaining, lifting the WNBA's San Antonio Silver Stars to an 80-78 win over the Sacramento Monarchs to win their Western Conference playoff series.

In another WNBA playoff game, Tamika Catchings had 30 points and 13 rebounds to power the Indiana Fever to a 93-88 overtime win against the Connecticut Sun and advance to the Eastern Conference finals.

BRAZIL FALTERS Larry Ayuso had 24 points to spark Puerto Rico to a 97-75 victory over Brazil in the second round of the FIBA Americas tournament in Las Vegas.

Nuggets forward Nene scored six points for Brazil.

Jesse Young had 22 points as Canada used its size advantage to win 95-88 against Uruguay.

Carlos Delfino had 19 points and 11 rebounds to help Argentina to an 86-63 victory over Venezuela.

KUNITZ GETS DEAL Anaheim Ducks forward Chris Kunitz has signed a four-year, $14.9 million contract extension with the team.

BUS FIRE A bus carrying the second-place team from Japan and a team from Taiwan leaving the Little League World Series caught fire near Lewisburg, Pa., but the children escaped safely.

U.S. ADDS PAIR The United States finalized its 10-man team for the Walker Cup by adding Rickie Fowler and Kyle Stanley, leaving out British Amateur champion Drew Weaver and U.S. Amateur finalist Michael Thompson.
