Crash victim, 11, dies after being taken off life support
Published August 27, 2007 at midnight
An 11-year-old Commerce City girl has died from injuries suffered in a two-car crash Friday morning.
Mercedes King was removed from life support at Children's Hospital on Saturday and died a short time later, Commerce City police reported.
The accident happened at 7:31 a.m. Friday. King was a passenger in the front seat of a white Dodge Neon that her 19-year- old brother, Marcus King, was driving to take her to Kearney Middle School, where she was a sixth-grader.
According to police, the Neon was westbound on East 60th Avenue at Monaco Street when a southbound white Pontiac Grand Prix ran a red light and hit the passenger side of the Neon.
Police identified the driver of the Grand Prix as Yesica Moreno, 24, of Commerce City. Moreno did not have any visible injuries, police said.
Marcus King was hospitalized with a broken arm.
Investigators do not believe drugs or alcohol were involved in the accident. All of the occupants of the two cars were wearing seat belts.
No charges have been filed, but the investigation is continuing.
Commerce City police Sgt. Joe Sandoval said Sunday that investigators have been reconstructing the accident. They will report their findings to the Adams County District Attorney's Office this week.
