Hanley's double duty pays off

Published August 25, 2007 at midnight

ENGLEWOOD - Typically, when a defensive lineman picks up a fumble in his own team's territory, the chances of running him down are pretty good.

But when that lineman doubles as the starting tailback, such as Jay Hanley of Steamboat Springs, those chances diminish exponentially.

Hanley's recovery of a botched snap and subsequent 62-yard dash to the end zone cemented the Sailors' 23-14 win Friday at Kent Denver in a zero-week cross-classification game.

Steamboat Springs, ranked No. 3 in Class 3A, held a 16-14 advantage before Hanley's dash, and Kent Denver, ranked fourth in 2A, was driving for the go-ahead score with about 9 minutes left in the fourth quarter.

"It was awesome," said Hanley, a 6-foot-1, 240-pounder who rushed for 124 yards on 25 carries and a touchdown on offense.

"The ball popped up, and I just picked it up and ran with it. It happened quick."

Kent Denver was in the shotgun, facing third-and-8 from inside the Steamboat Springs 30-yard line. The snap went over the head of quarterback Kendall Early, and the Sailors' Nigel Hammond screened off Early while Hanley scooped up the ball.

"Normally, I would just jump and dive on the ball," Hanley said. "But because there was nobody there, I picked it up and ran."

Steamboat Springs trailed 8-3 at the half but quickly took a 16-8 lead on touchdown runs by Hanley and Hammond. Kent Denver roared back when Michael Reilly caught a 40-yard touchdown pass from Early with 4 seconds to play in the third quarter.

The Sun Devils missed the two- point conversion but quickly got the ball back and were putting together a solid drive before the fumble return.

"Every football game has one play that changes the momentum," Reilly said. "But as a team, we have to come back from that. We never recovered from that."

Additional bright spots for Steamboat Springs included sophomore quarterback Austin Hinder (7-for-8, 74 yards) and a blitzing defense that accounted for six sacks.

"We all got fired up in that second half and just came out to play," said sophomore linebacker Cody Harris, who had two sacks.

After getting on the board with a blocked-punt safety, Kent Denver earned its halftime advantage when Patrick Murray ran a fake punt 74 yards for a touchdown while Steamboat Springs mistakenly had only nine players on the field.

Murray, also the starting tailback, rushed for 119 yards on nine carries before leaving because of an injury. Backup Tyler Jackson matched Murray's 119 yards on 13 attempts.
