A MODEL DISPLAY
One of the 4-H projects that will be on display today at the Colorado State Fair is model rockets. The hobby is 50 years old this year. A few rocketry facts:
1957 was the founding year of the hobby, when rocket designs of lightweight, nonmetallic materials (paper tubes, balsa wood and plastic) were mated with factory-made engines, making for a safe pastime.
600 million model rockets had been flown as of 2003.
20,000 element- ary and middle schools have used model rockets as learning tools.
