2-year-old killed at home by dad's car

A 2-year-old boy was killed after he stepped in front of his father's moving vehicle in the driveway of their Chaffee Park home Friday night.

The youngster, whose identity was not released late Friday, died at the scene, said detective John White, Denver police spokesman.

The toddler's father, whose identity also was not released, had arrived home about 7:30 p.m. Friday in the 4300 block of Pecos Street just a few blocks from the District 1 police station.

Witnesses told detectives that the child often opened the gate to the driveway when he heard his father pull up into the driveway to let him inside, the detective said.

After the tot opened the gate the father drove his vehicle into the long driveway which is shaped like a J, White said. However, as he continued into the driveway his son apparently darted in front of his car and was struck by the vehicle.

Detectives were at the home late Friday continuing to investigate the tragedy.
