Will Beckham play Sunday in Colorado?

Published August 24, 2007 at midnight

Soccer star David Beckham isn’t expected to play Sunday when the L.A. Galaxy come to Colorado, his coach told the L.A. Daily News.

If that’s the case, a lot of spectators for the capacity crowd of more than 18,500 will be disappointed for the 5 p.m. match at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City. This was supposed to be the soccer icon’s first appearance on the field in Colorado. He attended but didn’t play in the Major League Soccer All-Star Game in Commerce City in July.

Fans who wanted to hob-knob with Beckham and his famous former Spice Girl wife, Victoria, have been bounced around with conflicting reports on a party the couple planned to attend while here for the match. A reception at the Omni Interlocken, where the team was supposed to stay. Then the event was canceled. Now it’s back on, with a blast e-mail to patrons of the Church nightclub on Lincoln being told to come by and see the celebrity couple after the game. You can call 303-217-0921 to buy a ticket and learn the secret location of the party.

In a match last night at the Home Depot Center field, Beckham was kicked in the midsection by Jesse Marsch of Germany’s Chivas team while chasing down a loose ball midfield, and a scrum of players from both teams cut loose. After a swing of a fist and a headbutt, the Galaxy Kevin Harmse and Chivas' Alex Zotinca were ejected. Beckham was pulled away from Marsch, shouting and swignint his right arm when the referee tried to grab him and get him away.

After only a pair of cameos and no training sessions for nearly two months, Beckham has now played 90 minutes in New York, London and Los Angeles over the past five days. Galaxy coach Frank Yallop said he didn't expect Beckham to play Sunday in Colorado.
