A look at long-term deals (at least five years) made in the past five years:
National League
ARIZONA signed SS Stephen Drew, the No. 1 draft choice in 2004, to a five-year, $5.5 million deal the night before they would have lost the rights to him in June 2005. OF Justin Upton, the No. 1 pick in 2005, agreed to a five-year, $6.1 million deal in January 2006.
ATLANTA has not signed a player to a five-year deal since Andruw Jones received a six-year, $75 million contract, which expires at the end of this season.
CHICAGO signed RHP Carlos Zambrano to a five-year, $91.5 million extension this month to avoid having him become a free agent. Derrek Lee signed a five-year, $65 million extension in April 2006, and 3B Aramiz Ramirez received a five-year, $75 million deal to avoid free agency last November. Free-agent OF Alfonso Soriano signed an eight-year, $136 million deal last offseason.
CINCINNATI does not have a player signed past 2010.
COLORADO in April 2001 signed 1B Todd Helton to a nine-year, $141.5 million extension that took effect in 2003.
FLORIDA does not have a player signed past this season.
HOUSTON signed 1B Lance Berkman to a six-year, $85 million extension in spring 2005 and RHP Roy Oswalt to a five-year, $73 million extension Aug. 31, 2006. Free-agent OF Carlos Lee signed a six-year, $100 million deal last offseason.
LOS ANGELES signed free-agent OF Juan Pierre to a 5-year, $44 million deal last offseason.
MILWAUKEE signed No. 1 draft choice Rickie Weeks to a 5-year, $4.8 million guarantee in August 2003.
NEW YORK signed 3B David Wright to a six-year, $55 million contract in August 2006 that bought him out of arbitration and three years of free agency. Free-agent OF Carlos Beltran signed a five-year $119 million contract before 2005.
PHILADELPHIA signed 1B Jim Thome to a six-year, $85 million deal before 2002 and agreed to pick up $22 million of the $43.5 million that remained on his contract when he was traded to the White Sox before last year. OF Pat Burrell signed a six-year, $50 million contract before 2003 to avoid arbitration. SS Jimmy Rollins signed a five-year, $40 million deal in June 2005 that kept him from free agency. 2B Chase Utley signed a seven-year, $85 million deal last offseason that bought out three years of arbitration and four years of free agency.
PITTSBURGH has no commitment beyond the four-year, $18.2 million deal that OF Jason Bay signed before 2006.
ST. LOUIS signed RHP Chris Carpenter to a five-year, $63.5 million deal last December. 1B Albert Pujols signed a seven-year, $100 million deal in February 2004 that bought out three years of arbitration and four years of free agency. 3B Scott Rolen signed an eight-year, $90 million contract before 2003.
SAN DIEGO GM Sandy Alderson has a five-year deal. No player, however, has signed more than a four-year deal. Jake Peavy has one year remaining on his $90 million deal. RHP Chris Young ($14.5 million) and 1B Adrian Gonzalez ($9.5 million) signed deals during the past winter that bought out their arbitration years.
SAN FRANCISCO signed free-agent LHP Barry Zito to a seven-year, $126 million deal last winter, largest guarantee ever for a pitcher.
WASHINGTON has not exceeded the four-year deals given SS Cristian Guzman ($16.8 million) and C Brian Schneider ($16 million) before 2006.
American League
BALTIMORE signed free-agent SS Miguel Tejada to a six-year, $72 million deal before 2004.
BOSTON signed RHP Daisuke Matsuzaka for five years and $52 million before this season and also paid a $51 million posting fee to acquire his rights from Japan. The Red Sox also signed OF J.D. Drew to a five-year, $70 million deal before 2006.
CHICAGO signed 1B Paul Konerko to a five-year, $50 million deal before 2006. The only other deal for more than three years was the four-year, $56 million extension the Sox gave LHP Mark Buerhle earlier this season.
CLEVELAND has pre-empted free agency for three players C Victor Martinez, signed to a five-year, $15.5 million extension in April 2005; SS Jhonny Peralta, signed to a five-year, $13 million deal in March 2006; and OF Grady Sizemore, signed to a six-year, $23.45 million deal in March 2006.
DETROIT signed free-agent OF Magglio Ordoñez to a five-year, $75 million deal before 2004. RHP Justin Verlander was given a five-year, $4.5 million deal to sign after selecting him as the No. 2 player taken in the 2004 draft.
KANSAS CITY bought OF David DeJesus out of two years arbitration and two years free agency with a five-year, $13.85 million deal before last year. The Royals signed free-agent RHP Gil Meche to a five-year, $55 million deal this past offseason.
LOS ANGELES signed Cuban defector Kendry Morales to a six-year, $10 million deal in December 2004. Free-agent OF Vladimir Guerrero signed a five-year, $70 million deal with a $15 million option for 2009 before the 2004 season, and OF Gary Matthews signed a five-year, $55 million deal last offseason.
MINNESOTA hasnt signed anyone to a five-year contract but has two players in the midst of four-year deals. LHP Johan Santana has a 4-year, $39.75 million deal that runs through 2008, and C Joe Mauer signed a 4-year, $33 million deal this past offseason that bought out his first year of free agency.
OAKLAND signed 3B Eric Chavez to a six-year, $66 million extension in March 2004. SS Bobby Crosby signed a five-year, $12.75 million in April 2005 after his first year in the big leagues.
NEW YORK signed LHP Kei Igawa to a five-year, $20 million deal in response to Boston signing Daisuke Matsuzaka before this season.
SEATTLE signed OF Ichiro Suzuki to a five-year, $90 million extension at the All-Star break. Free-agent 3B Adrian Beltre signed a five-year, $64 million deal before the 2005 season.
TAMPA BAY has signed two of its top draft choices to five-year deals Jeff Niemann, from 2004, for $5.2 million, and B.J. Upton, from 2002, for $4.6 million.
TEXAS signed SS Michael Young to a five-year, $80 million extension in spring training that carries through 2013. 3B Hank Blalock signed a five-year, $15.25 million after 2003, his first full big-league season. Free-agent RHP Kevin Millwood signed a five-year, $60 million deal before 2006.
TORONTO signed extensions with RHP Roy Halladay (five years, $65.5 million in the spring of 2006) and OF Vernon Wells (seven years, $126 million last December. 3B Eric Hinske signed a five-year, $14.75 million deal after his rookie season in March 2003 and was since dumped. Free-agent LHP B.J. Ryan got a five-year, $47 million deal and RHP A.J. Burnett a five-year, $55 million deal, both signed before 2006. Both also are on the disabled list with serious arm injuries.
