PARKER: Beckham event a go - or no?

Published August 24, 2007 at midnight

Hey, folks. Want to bend it like Beckham? Well, if you call Steve Jacobson, one of the David Beckham meet-and-greet organizers, you can schmooze with the soccer superstar.

Never mind that Jacobson's colleague, Charles Pankey, told me Wednesday the event was canceled. It's back on, with a catch.

"We're not able to disclose where the event is being held due to security issues," Jacobson told me Thursday,

Apparently BoomCloud, the Denver Internet firm charged with handling the charity event for the L.A. Galaxy, is nervous about the anticipated hordes of rubber- necking fans and Denver "paparazzi." I've never even heard Denver and paparazzi used in the same sentence.

The event, to raise money for Project CURE and The British Memorial Gardens, was originally set for the Omni Interlocken, where the team was supposed to stay. When word got out, the Galaxy switched locations, leaving the Omni holding empty rooms, and made the venue switch.

Actually, you can find out easily. Call 303-217-0921 and you can buy a ticket, then be told the super-secret, double-probation location of the event.

But hey, why even call? Despite BoomCloud's intense efforts to conceal the location, on Thursday afternoon promoters at The Church nightclub on Lincoln sent out a blast e-mail saying: "Come party with the Rapids and the Galaxy after the game on Sunday."

Some secret.

To confuse matters further, The L.A. Galaxy sent out a news release late Thursday denying any knowledge of any event outside Sunday night's game.

"It has been brought to our attention that individuals claiming to represent the L.A. Galaxy and our players have attempted to arrange an event involving our team," the release said. "Please be aware that we have no affiliation with these individuals and they have absolutely no authorization to act on our behalf in any way. We apologize to anyone who may have been misled."

Buyer beware.

ELWAY'S WAY: Elway's Steakhouse "holy trinity" - John Elway, GM Tom Moxcey and executive chef Tyler Wiard - are featured in a story called "Supreme Steakhouse" in the September/October issue of Cooking With Paula Deen, a national magazine from the Food Network star, restaurant owner and cookbook author.

The two-page article lauds Elway's success. "Three years ago John Elway stepped outside his usual boundaries to delve into the restaurant business," the story says. "Now, Elway's is flooded daily with satisfied customers, and he's learning all over again what victory tastes like."

What the story didn't include was the news that a second Elway's will open mid-November in the Ritz-Carlton downtown.

EAVESDROPPING on a "cougar" eyeing a hot guy at Elway's: "I'll take one of him to go."
