NUMBERS GAME

23 times Oakland has used the disabled list this season, equaling the franchise record set in 1992. There currently are nine Athletics players on the disabled list. Athletics players have missed 982 days, a team record.

RESTLESS ABOUT YOUNG

There is concern in San Diego about hard-throwing right-hander Chris Young.

After time on the disabled list because of a pulled rib cage muscle, Young came out of his start against the Mets on Tuesday because of lower back stiffness. He was scratched from his scheduled start Sunday, but no further decisions have been made.

HE SAID IT

"I'll let you know when we're in a rebuilding mode. Now is not the time for that. We still have far too many pieces that I consider championship pieces for us to go in that direction."

Kenny Williams, White Sox general manager, after signing Jermaine Dye to a two-year, $22 million extension, giving the team 12 players guaranteed $94,325,000 in 2008.
