Lightning set Westminster home afire

Published August 24, 2007 at midnight

A resident of a Westminster home awoke to a big crack of lightning at 1:30 a.m. today, reset her clocks and returned to snoozing — only to wake up at 3 a.m. to find her house on fire, apparently from another strike.

The only resident of the home in the 9700 block of Newland Court smelled smoke and got out safely, the Westminster Fire Department said in a news release. She was not identified.

Firefighters spent 25 minutes putting out the fire, which sent flames shooting from the roof. They stayed until 5:30 a.m. to watch for flareups.

Damage to the home, including destruction of the roof, was estimated at $250,000.

Lightning also is suspected as the cause of a power outage around 1:30 a.m. today at 104th Avenue and Westminster Boulevard. Traffic lights were down and shopping area alarms went off.
